For the summer of 2025 through the beginning of summer 2026, I am offering a series of classes on ZOOM called THE WONDER OF ALL THINGS WILD, where we explore the wild natural world of Africa — as well as STUDIES FROM THE ART OF JAN VAN KESSEL, INSECTS & BOTANICALS. These classes can be painted in a journal to create a book, in a sketchbook, or individually just enjoyed as a class. All classes are painted in watercolor & gouache with some in mixed media.

  • All classes are held on weekends

  • 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM PST on Zoom

  • Cost for each class is $50 per day

All classes are recorded & available to purchase

  • Sketchbook, journal, or good quality watercolor or mixed media smooth paper (example: Arches 140 lb. Acid free, hot press watercolor paper). I will be using and demonstrating on a Khadi Smooth Watercolor Sketchbook 8 × 9.5 inches for ‘The Wonder of All Things Wild’ classes. For ‘Studies From The Art of Jan van Kessel, Insects & Botanicals’ classes, I will be using a Stillman & Birn, Beta Series Sketchbook 5.5 x 8.5 inches, white xtra heavy watercolor paper. Black and brown 005 Micron pens. White and black (wax-base) color pencils like Prismacolor. Graphite pencil (I use BIC 0.5mm HB #2). Eraser. Tracing paper. Burnisher (bone folder). Blending stub. Xacto Knife.

    Brushes: #0-#3 Rounds, #2-#4 Filberts, 1/4 in. Stencil Brush, 1/4 in. Filbert Grainer Brush, Micro-Nova by Da Vinci micro detail brush set of 4 (5/0, 10/0, 15/0, 20/0) Set # 4270.

  • Winsor & Newton Permanent White Gouache. Next colors either watercolor or gouache: Buff Titanium, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Van Dyke Brown, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Red, Daniel Smith Lavender, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Daniel Smith Undersea Green, Daniel Smith Green Gold, Sap Green, Winsor Green, Perylene Green, Perylene Maroon, Perylene Violet, Winsor Violet Alizarin Crimson, Ivory Black, Paynes Gray, Gold Iridescent Paint.

    We don’t use all these colors for each class. When I send out the links, directions, and images for each class (materials list) I will include the colors used for that particular class. All these colors are from Winsor & Newton or Daniel Smith.
